The Cuban Kid in concert
“The Cuban Kid in Concert” starring Lucio Fernandez
“Less Cuban than ever!!!
Lucio Fernandez, nominated for a 2008 MAC Award in the category of New York Male Debut for his performance in the show “The Cuban Kid in concert”, will return to Don’t Tell Mama, 343 West 46th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues) in New York City on Friday, June 13th, 20th, and 27th at 9:00 PM.
Lucio will be accompanied by his five piece band, performing Broadway tunes, a few Latin standards as well as some of the poetry from his new CD. The show centers around Lucio’s life story of being born in Cuba, his experiences growing up in “Jersey”, and becoming a City Commissioner.
From poverty to City Commissioner… from playing barefoot in ditches with paper boats as a kid to singing in New York City… this is Lucio’s story. He was born in Havana, Cuba to a poor family. His mother was a seamstress and one of sixteen children. As a child, he and his mother had to leave the country due to political reasons… his father was a political prisoner. They lived in Spain for one year before arriving in the United States. They settled in New Jersey, where he still calls home. After graduating from Rutgers University he became a professional actor traveling the world with several Broadway shows. Increasingly becoming more socially conscious, he set out to help others, leading him to become involved with many charities, serving on many boards, and finally becoming a Commissioner for the City of Union City. In his act, “The Cuban Kid” in Concert, he discusses the challenges of being an artist while serving as a “politician”. He jokes about being a Cuban-American singing Broadway tunes, and of being an artist in the world of “machismo”.
The show is written by Gerard Karabin and Lucio Fernandez, musical arrangements by Mark Goodman, directed by Megan Fernandez, with musical direction by Robert Webb.
If you want to hear memorable show tunes, romantic Latin standards, some poetry and have a few laughs, check out The Cuban Kid in concert.
